Steve Banks started his sea-going career as a Union Steam Ship Co. cadet in 1974 and went on to serve locally and worldwide for the next 23 years. He served his last 5 years as master on Trans-Tasman container ships and held pilotage exemptions in 8 NZ ports and also Sydney. Subsequently served as a tug master on Wellington’s older Voith tugs for 3 years and then commenced piloting until the present time.

In 2012 Steve became active in the NZMPA, organising conferences and served as VP 2012-2015, President 2015-2020 and Secretary 2020-2022. He then took on the role of Pacific Island Engagement Officer. Steve now devotes much more time to increasing engagement with Pacific Island pilots and operators.
